Resident Evil: Apocalypse review

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 7 March 2010 01:45 (A review of Resident Evil: Apocalypse)

"My name is Alice. And I remember everything."

If you want a movie which makes you feel as if you are watching a video game minus the yellow colored hues aka 300, try taking a peek at this film. The events probably take off a few hours after the first one, when Dr. Isaacs (voice of Jason Isaacs in the first film and Iain Glen in the second) orders that the Hive should be opened in order for him to find out what happened in the underground facility. Unfortunately, those ignorant bastards let out the remaining undead workers (and, as we see later, even a few Lickers), thus causing the virus to spread further into the city. Due to this, the Umbrella Corporation has forced an immediate lockdown and quarantine of Raccoon City, and they take steps in evacuating their high priority members, such as Dr. Charles Ashford (Harris), who initially refused to come with the company's men until he has found his daughter, Angela (Sophie Vavasseur). Umbrella has activated Alice (Jovovich), taking her out of her catatonic state and allowing her to roam the streets of Raccoon City. It is noted that Alice seems to have grown extraordinary powers while in her slumber. Enter Jill Valentine (Guillory), a disgraced S.T.A.R.S. member who seems to have a good grasp at what she's dealing with (she repeatedly instructs people to "Shoot 'em in the head."). In another part of the city, another S.T.A.R.S. member, Carlos Olivera (Fehr) has been suffering losses in his team. He and two of his teammates see a helicopter belonging to the Umbrella Corporation stop at a nearby mall and attempt to attract its attention. However, all they find are huge metal cases carrying heavy firearms, and after their teammate reanimates and bites Olivera in the arm, they head for another part of town. Valentine, her friend Peyton (Adoti), and former Raccoon 7 reporter Terri Morales (Holt), hide out in a chapel and are attacked by a couple of Lickers and are rescued by Alice. They receive a call from Dr. Ashford, who offers them a way out of the city if they find his daughter, who is hiding in her school. There, they meet up with Olivera, who has also been given the same offer. Now it is up to them to battle their way out of the city, which will be bombed with a nuclear device in order to obliterate every trace of the infection. The movie may not have been as good as the first, but it still gave me a sense of continuity based on the events which unfurled in the previous film. I also loved how Guillory portrayed Jill Valentine; I may not be an expert on the game, but I could tell that her portrayal was right on. :))) Still a good film to watch.

The Hot Chick review

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 7 March 2010 01:43 (A review of The Hot Chick)

"Boys are cheats and liars, they're such a big disgrace. They will tell you anything to get to second base... ball, baseball he thinks he's gonna score. If you let him go all the way then you are a hor... ticulture studies flowers, geologist studies rocks. The only thing a guy wants from you is a place to put his cock... roaches, beetles, butterflies and bugs. Nothing makes him happier than a giant pair of jug... glers and acrobats, a dancing bear named Chuck. All guys really want to do is - forget it, no such luck."

This movie is certainly great for laughs. I loved the way Schneider and McAdams were able to pull off the old switcheroo - Schneider becomes a popular, girly girl stuck in a man's body, while McAdams turns into a tough guy placed inside a (what else?) hot chick's body. After publicly humiliating a fat batchmate during the cheerleading display, Jessica (McAdams) and her friends, April (Faris), Lulu (Holden), and Keecia (Murray) stumble upon an African store where Jessica finds a pair of earrings which she finds irresistible. Ignoring the saleswoman's quip about the earrings being a valuable artifact, Jessica switches them for an ordinary pair of earrings. After few series of unfortunate events later, Jessica switches bodies with Clive Maxton (Schneider), and begins on a quest to get her life (and body) back. I know a lot of people hated this film, but I don't give a bag of nuts about it. I think Schneider was great as his turn as a popular cheerleader who had the misfortune to end up in a penal situation. But I think it was Faris who really led the pack and the sweet, ditzy, and lovable April, who is not only as hot as her best friend, but as loyal as a puppy. Loved the morals in the film, such as valuing what you have, staunch friendship, and being proud of your heritage no matter what it is. Speaking of being proud of one's heritage, in case you didn't know, Rob Schneider is part Filipino, just like me (except of course I'm 3/4 Filipino and 1/4 Chinese). ;) :))))

Species review

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 7 March 2010 01:41 (A review of Species)

"No one ever asked me to find anything they didn't want dead."

Reminiscent of Alien and Predator, Species is a movie about an alien race infiltrating Earth in an attempt to take over the humans which live there. Unlike the two other science fiction series, however, Species is a whole new ballgame in a sense that it is an alien-human hybrid that threatens the survival of humans. Ironically, it is the humans who create this hybrid, led by a scientist, Fitch, who assumed that because they were able to get an alternative supply of energy from the mysterious alien source, that alien species is friendly towards humans.
How very wrong he was.
The DNA strand produced a perfect creature: a beautiful human whose growth spurt was insanely faster than that of a normal human, but who had immense strength and sharp senses. But they say that looks are only skin deep, and in Sil's case (they named the alien-human hybrid Sil) what lies beneath the surface of her skin is very deadly. Being blessed with an alien persona, Sil (Natasha Henstridge) has this natural instinct to kill anyone who threatens her, including an innocent ticket woman who came upon her cocoon while she was still in the chrysalis stage. She also has an estrogen gland which makes her hungry for mating, and she does all she can to mate with a human male. It's funny to see how an alien who looks like Sigourney Weaver's nemesis run after a man while barely repressing her eagerness to have a "banging" good time.
In the end, she ends up with Alfred Molina, and she finally gets pregnant. I guess the movie is more comical than serious, but I have to admire the way Henstridge effectively portrays Sil as being a cold, emotionless male PREDATOR, while repressing the ALIEN within. Hmmm. I guess they couldn't really take out the two series from this move, eh? :)))) Big names, yes, and they certainly liven up what would have been an otherwise draggy movie. Nah, keedin. :DDD

Resident Evil review

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 7 March 2010 01:38 (A review of Resident Evil)

"You're all going to die down here."

What one hell of a bloody fantastic ride. If you really want to know how something as simple as a viral pandemic starts which results in the possible destruction of humanity, this movie is for you. I haven't played any of the games in my entire life, but that didn't stop me from fully appreciating the flow of events and thoughts in the film. The movie crew and the director certainly covered all the bases when they begun work on this project. By the end of the film, you have a good gist of what happened; from the reason behind the amnesia of the two unknown people at the beginning of the film until the very ending. I liked the way the events of this film tied up with the second, giving you the impression of how fast the events unfold. The movie starts off with a person (presumably a scientist) take two vials of blue and green liquid and places them inside a metal container. He takes one blue colored vial and throws it on the table, smashing it open. We can see a type of gas escaping from the vial and entering the ventilation system. Cut to the next scene, we see a young, red-haired woman waking up inside a bathroom, clothed only by the shower curtain. As she exits, she realizes that she is in a mansion, and after finding a red dress on a bed, puts it on and proceeds outside. Before she can go outside, however, she is yanked back inside and is captured by a military group. There is another man there, who claims that he is a policeman. The military group take him with them nevertheless, and they are ushered into a train, hidden under the mansion, where they find another man, who seems to have been knocked unconscious. When he revives, they realize he also has amnesia, and they continue on. Once outside a huge pair of iron doors, the three "civilians", who are named Alice (Jovovich), Matt (Mabius), and Spence (Purefoy) that the main computer system, named the Red Queen (voiced by Michaela Dicker) suddenly shut the doors of the Hive (the name of the underground facility) and killed everyone inside. Their mission is to find out what happened down there. The next scenes... I leave it up to you to watch the film in order for you to find out for yourself. The storyline was easy to follow, and the sudden twists may not have been as shocking as those in Saw, but they were still as effective in making the viewer stunned for a few seconds. :)))) In case you're into movies which answer the questions "How?" and "Why?", as well as those which involve legions of the undead and are spin offs of video games, this film is for you. ;)

Quantum of Solace review

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 7 March 2010 01:36 (A review of Quantum of Solace)

"The first thing you should know about us is that we have people everywhere."

The movie and the storyline were great. The director was not. What would have been a fantastic follow up to one of the best bond movies in years fell short of its mark, all because of erratic camera movements and focusing too much on the location shoots. I must admit, the scenery did complement to the events, but i can't help but feel that they could have substituted a few of the locations for studio shots. But that's water under the bridge; i'm just glad that the movie wasn't entirely ruined. Craig gave his signature take on bond, but this time, he added the factor of a man bent on extracting revenge on the people responsible for the death of the woman he loved, no matter how hard he tries to deny it. What i cannot understand is how some people think that Kurylenko's character as a bond girl is one of the worst they've seen. Just because she didn't bare her body and snog bond doesn't make her rubbish. She is one of the few bond girls who can actually keep up with the agent, while looking chic and stylish in a dress. She's definitely a kindred spirit: she also used her sexual wiles to get into Greene's good graces just so she could have a shot at killing the man who killed her parents and her sister. I really loved her character, and no matter what other people say, Camille may very well be one of the best bond girls ever. Blonde and white aren't the only criteria for being hot, people. :p Finally, Greene. I find it interesting that the people involved with Quantum have colors as their last names. Is it a clue to the nature of the organization? And when will Blofield (if Craig IS the same bond as those played by connery, moore, lazenby, Dalton, and brosnan) be introduced? I saw Greene as a nerdy geek gone evil. He's smart, and at the same time scary; he can have anyone he wants dispatched without exerting any effort other than how to dispose of the body. Brains over brawns. A true villain. If only forster smoothed out the camera movements in the car and rooftop chases, it would have been perfect. I still love this movie to death, though. :DDDD
